Just How Comfortable Is a Futon Mattress?

Well, that is going to depend on why you are sleeping on a futon mattress and for how long. If you are bunking on that futon mattress because you forgot your wife at the airport and she waited hours for a hubby that never showed and had to call her sister for a ride, you are guaranteed to get next to no sleep for days, regardless of how new or nice it is. Not that I know anything about such things, but if you are staying over at a buddy’s house because you and he got trashed for anyone to drive home, than sleeping on that futon is going to be a heck of a lot more comfortable than the floor.

Qualities of a Modern Futon

Quality futon mattresses are exactly that, they are mattresses. In fact, they beat a brand new fold out hands down in my opinion, as the mattresses are so much nicer to sleep on. They have pocket coiled springs and are soft to the touch. They come with a slip cover that can be taken off and washed, and overall the experience isn’t a bad one with a warm blanket and a good pillow. Fold outs, I swear every time I sleep on one, I can feel every spring from that mattress in my back and Lord mercy, have you ever tried to move one! It takes three men and an Army mule to get one up a flight of stairs and I put my back out helping my dad haul his old one off. Trust me, the futon mattress is just better.

Considering Back Issues

Most of us have trouble sleeping when we are uncomfortable, but for those of us with clinical back pain problems, the experience can be almost unbearable. If you have a guest coming over who has those problems, consider one of the higher end futon mattress products out there. I think you can even buy pillow tops for guests to sleep on. The bottom line is that though it is still a futon, the mattresses that are available today are pretty nice and provide at least moderate levels of comfort for reasonable lengths of time, provided that the wife isn’t flogging you in your sleep for doing or saying something supremely stupid earlier that day in front of her family.

No matter why you are sleeping on that futon mattress, consider making it a new one. They are, all joking aside, tons better than they ever used to be or could have been and actually qualify as a mattress, which if you ask me, they never used to. Futons are so much better, like everything else nowadays, and getting one in your home is cheaper and easier than ever. They come in handy, not only when you forget your wife, but when your kids have friends over or if something goes wrong in your house, say a branch flies though a window in a windstorm.

At last, you are free from the smelly hard old futon mattress, only the minor inconvenience of what to replace it with remains. Most of us go through our futon phase sometime in our lives, and breaking free of it is a rite of passage for many college kids. Depending on your situation, you may consider the different options out there, just finding one that works best for you and your changing environment. There are lots of things to consider and this guide should help you decide where you fall in line.

Married!

Congratulations, your new bride gets to pick you out a mattress. You bet your butt she isn’t going to sleep on that smelly old futon mattress, so you had better get your backside down to the mattress outlet to pick something nice that you both like, before she does it without your input. The upside is, if you have been sleeping on a fifteen year old futon, anything she likes is going to be a bonus.

Graduation!

Leaving your campus behind can be kind of sad, but it does come with some perks. If you are moving back home, your mom will have a decent bed for you. If you are moving in with a girlfriend, she is going to insist on a better bed (and probably already has one) and if you got a job right out of college, you will be getting a pay bump and can afford something better than a futon mattress.

Regardless of the why’s, giving this up means starting your life over new and fresh, and better things are on that horizon, starting with a better mattress.

A new job is always exciting, and when it means moving up in the world, most people get a better mattress even if the old one isn’t a mustard yellow futon mattress. Seriously, this is a great moment for someone to enjoy. As the saying goes, “To the victor goes the spoils”. In your case, it means a comfier home and a sweet new (real) mattress. So enjoy shopping for it and remember, your futon was there for you before you hit it big.

Remember, no matter why you are moving up in the world, or what you are moving up to, the change can be very exciting and you will likely look back fondly on the fun times you had while you were living on a futon mattress. It is a phase of total freedom for most, for many kids the first item of furnishing they ever buy for themselves, and it will always keep a tender spot in your mind. That said, the day you throw it out will likely be one of the happiest in your life too, so enjoy and remember, it all started on a futon mattress.

This type of furniture is not meant to be used for years and years of daily use, and having spent my time on one as a young adult, I can tell you they do not make a good daily sleeper. A cheaper twin mattress is a better idea in this case and you will have a better longevity out of it as well. If you have a part time child, one who spends weekends at your home, these work pretty well for that, not killing the kid who is on it.

Many of us started out on a futon mattress. We have seen the good in them and the bad, and fortunately they get better every single year. Technology works to improve an already pretty neat product. Take a look in your area and see what the local mattress stores offer in sizes that will accommodate best the needs of both your kids and your home or wallet. Don’t let them con you into something that will be a bad idea for both of you, and if you want to be real hardcore, go pick it out without them. After all, you are paying for the futon mattress; if they want to buy it and put it in their own house, they can do whatever they want.

Everybody has college day stories about an old futon mattress, as they are legendary in their levels of discomfort. I know one guy who spent a whole year sleeping on one, and surprise, surprise! He just hates them now. But I am happy to say that futon mattresses are ten times better than they ever used to be, and sleeping on a futon mattress nowadays does not necessarily resign you to a diet of Aleve and comfort food. Far from it, the modern futon is a veritable work of art enhancing any home, office or guest room, and even as the main sofa in a living room or den.

When to Replace an Old Futon Mattress

When the stuffing is all crammed into the corners of the pad, that is a good time to replace your old futon mattress. If, when you lay on it, you can count with your back how many support bars the thing has, you should probably get a new mattress. If your guests make reservations at the budget motel in town claiming that the beds (roaches or not) are more comfy than your old futon, you should consider giving up the old futon. There are many tell tale signs, those of you with wives will probably just be told that theirs is going the way of the dodo.

Where to Put the New Futon Mattress

Hooray, a fresh, unspoiled soda spill-free futon mattress for you! Now where to put it? How about the den – those with a video game room will find it a welcome addition, mostly because the female of the house will not approve of any super nice furniture in there, and the kids will just get it icky anyway.
